In a way that can best be described as intriguing, the
family of the late Sir Adesoji Aderemi, the former Ooni of Ife, has
witnessed three deaths of their matriarchs within a space of six weeks. The
first of such deaths was that of Princess Tejumade Alakija, frontline
bureaucrat and a former Head of Service of the old Oyo State. Alakija, who was
the first daughter of the former Ooni, died on Friday, 23rd August at the
University College Hospital, Ibadan, after a brief illness. She was 88 years
old. At various times, Alakija held the position of Permanent Secretary in the
old Western State and she was Pro-Chancellor of Universities of Benin, Nsukka
and Abuja. Until her death, Alakija was the head of the Adesoji Aderemi and
Omisore families. She is survived by Folake St. Mathew Daniel and Toyin Komolafe.
Her burial has been slated to hold in November. Meanwhile, while members of the
Aderemi family were mourning the exit of their grand matriarch and making plans
for her burial, death struck and snatched another member of the family. The
deceased, Princess Adeogun Lasekan was one of the daughters of the late Oba
Adesoji Aderemi and the younger sister of Princess Alakija. Her death occurred
on September 23rd, exactly a month after that of Mama Alakija. Known and loved
for her philanthropic activities and charming smile, Princess Lasekan is
survived by many children and grandchildren. Her funeral ceremony took place
last week, with a burial service, which took place at the All Saints Anglican
Church, Montegomery Road, Yaba while the interment was held at the Vaults and
Gardens, Ikoyi. A grand reception was later held in her honour at the
Shell Hall, Muson Center, Onikan. However, while members of the Aderemi family
were still absorbing the shock, occasioned by the second death, they lost
another prominent matriarch again. This time, it was Princess Teniade Areoye
Adunni Omoworare, who was also a daughter of the late Sir Adesoji Aderemi. She
died on Saturday, 12th October 2013 at the age of 82. Described as a very
amiable woman, Princess Omoworare is survived by Funke Oyewole, Nike Omoworare,
Segun Omoworare and Senator Jide Omoworare, a member of the Senate Chamber of
Nigeria. Her burial ceremony is being planned to hold in the last week of
November.
